ATCB Story of Impact

The Challenge The Art Therapy Credentials Board’s (ATCB) mission is to protect the public by promoting the competent and ethical practice of art therapy through the credentialing of art therapy professionals. As a nonprofit credentialing board that is mission driven, managing multiple challenges is common. By 1999, following the development of a defensibly sound examination and the Board Certified-Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential, the ATCB began to focus its attention on the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation process. At that time and since, rigorous board certification requires an advanced degree in art therapy, experience in the field, supervision, and successfully passing the exam. Accreditation demonstrates that the ATCB meets the highest established standards for a credentialing organization and promotes credibility. The steps to accreditation included designing a practice analysis survey that examined the career path of art therapists. OBJECTIVES To secure National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation for the Board Certified-Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential; To increase the number of credentialed art therapists; and, To gain national visibility for the mission of the ATCB and to increase credibility of ATR-BC credential holders.
