The Board Certified Coach Examination will be undergoing scheduled updates this year to make sure the examination is up to date and representative of the growing and changing field. CCE is always working to improve its examinations to ensure quality and fairness. To this end, CCE needs the help of subject matter experts (SMEs).
CCE is looking for experienced Board Certified Coaches to be a part of the process of updating this examination as SMEs. This work includes contributing to the job analysis, the examination specifications, and the item writing. This is a great time for BCCs to get involved in the examination development process as SMEs and make a substantial impact on the field of coaching.
“SMEs provide us with expertise in what coaching is all about,” says Assessment Project Manager Courtney Lambeth. “We provide the examination development expertise and rely on SMEs to tell us what coaches really do in the field.”
Serving as an SME is a unique opportunity, says Lambeth. “It’s a great way to connect with other professionals you may not otherwise meet, while strengthening the field.”
SME roles include serving on the job analysis committee, examination form reviewers, item reviewers, item writers, and serving on the standard-setting committee. The time commitment varies, and SME opportunities are available for those who can meet for only a couple of hours at a time as well as those who can commit to multiple day-long meetings. For coaches interested in the examination development process and what that looks like, there are many opportunities in the next year and a half.
This year, CCE will conduct a job analysis survey for the BCC credential. SMEs will create this survey, which will gather important information for examination development. The process is expected to begin in April. After data collection is complete, SMEs will utilize the findings in order to create a new content outline. This in turn will be the basis for a new form of the BCCE. Further opportunities for SMEs will include item writing, item review, and standard-setting. Now is a great time to get involved to truly influence the future of coaching.
In seeking SMEs, CCE hopes to represent all current specialties of the BCC certification. The BCC specialty designations are Executive/Corporate/Business/Leadership Coaching, Health/Wellness Coaching, Career Coaching, and Personal/Life Coaching.
After passing the evaluation process, applicants will be invited to join the job analysis committee or be contracted to write items. The job analysis committee meets either virtually or in person once or twice during a one-year period. Item reviewers look at individual examination items in the item bank. They ensure quality and revise or delete older items as needed. Examination form reviewers read the examination before any candidates take it to ensure that questions are appropriate, and that items do not give away the answer to other items.
We hope you will take this opportunity to serve as a leader in the coaching field. Apply to be an SME today!
