In commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential, each month during 2020 the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) will spotlight an ACS. This month we talked with Dr. Rosalyn Johnson, LMHC, LPC, NCC, CPCS, ACS, the owner of Thriving Minds Counseling Services, LLC, in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Johnson provides individual counseling for children, adolescents and adults, as well as couples and marriage counseling and family therapy for clients of all ages. She also provides telehealth counseling to adults, teens and their parents, and couples, and teaches part time at South University as an adjunct professor in the CACREP-accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program in Savannah.
“I decided to pursue the ACS credential because I wanted to stand out among other clinical supervisors in the field of counselor education and supervision as having met the rigorous requirements for supervising clinicians within the counseling profession,” she says. Dr. Johnson obtained the ACS credential in March of 2019.
“Obtaining the ACS credential has helped me in my career significantly, especially, since relocating recently from Miami to Savannah. It helped to demonstrate to my previous employer, as well as to the university that I teach at now as an Adjunct Clinical Mental Health Counseling Professor, that I have demonstrated knowledge and experience in the specialized discipline of counselor education and supervision, beyond just the doctorate level training I received.”
The ACS has helped Dr. Johnson to advance in her career, she says.
“This credential and certification also speaks to the years of experience that I’ve worked as a clinician and as a clinical supervisor, supervising both master’s student counseling interns and post-master’s clinicians needing to receive several years of clinical supervision, while working toward obtaining their state licensure,” Dr. Johnson says. “Having the ACS credential stands out on your resume to potential employers as well. For instance, one of my employers said, 'I saw on your resume that you have your ACS certification. We’ve been looking to hire someone who has that credential and were so excited when we saw that you’ve obtained it!' ”
Dr. Johnson received her bachelor’s in Human Services from Beacon College and her master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University. She received a post-master’s graduate certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education and Supervision Specialization from Argosy University in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to obtaining the ACS, she is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Qualified Supervisor for Registered Marriage and Family Therapy Interns and Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor, National Certified Counselor and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. In her spare time, she volunteers and serves on her church’s clinical intervention team, which provides crisis intervention services to church members in need.
“I plan to maintain my ACS credential because it helps distinguish me from other clinical supervisors in the counseling field, because having the ACS demonstrates professional competence and leadership, specifically in the area of counselor education and supervision. I feel that maintaining my ACS will definitely benefit me as I continue to pursue my dream of becoming a director of counseling services for a university counseling center.
“If you’re looking to go above and beyond and want to promote yourself as an effective, competent and well-rounded clinical supervisor helping to serve as the gatekeeper for supervisees, graduate student interns and emerging counselors who are new to the counseling profession, or looking to supervise those who are working toward obtaining their state licensure, then ACS is the credential for you! It will definitely prove to be beneficial for you as you continue to move throughout your professional career as a clinician and especially as a clinical supervisor, or if you’re just looking to make your next career move.”
