When the Counseling Compact begins issuing privileges to practice this fall, it’s expected that many counselors will use distance technology to provide services across compact states.
The Center for Credentialing & Education’s Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider (BC-TMH) is ideal for counselors who intend to practice under the compact using telehealth.
BC-TMH holders learn best practices in how to provide telehealth services, and the certification demonstrates to clients and employers that a practitioner is up to date with continuing education and ethical practices in telehealth. This added credibility is invaluable for counselors who intend to practice across state lines under the Counseling Compact.
“This is an exciting moment for telemental health,” say Tammi Lee, Vice President of CCE, Business Services and Partnerships. “With the Counseling Compact issuing privileges to practice, CCE is ready to support existing BC-TMH holders and all the counselors preparing to offer telehealth services for the first time.”
To practice in another compact state, a counselor must first obtain a privilege to practice in that state. A counselor from a compact state with privilege to practice in a participating state can do so without obtaining an additional license.
This important development comes after extensive preparation by the Compact Commission. The commission has collaborated with state licensure boards, national counseling organizations, and others to ensure strong public protections as part of this historic mental health workforce expansion.
For licensed counselors in Arizona and Minnesota, there are new opportunities available! Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) licensed by Arizona and who live in Arizona will be able to apply for the privilege to practice in Minnesota. Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs) licensed by Minnesota and who live in Minnesota will be able to apply for the privilege to practice in Arizona.
The National Board for Certified Counselors recently hosted an informational webinar about the compact registration process. You can view the recorded webinar here.
